USA vs Brazil Friendly-Notes & Nuggets

Team USA played against Brazil on the 16th in Chicago in front of a very large and energetic crowd, excited to watch this team of young stars. Team USA was without star center DeMarcus "Boogie" Cousins whom sat out due to injury. Team USA also played Sacramento forward Rudy Gay who joined the team following the Paul George injury and Kevin Durant departure.

Here are the notes and nuggets to take away from the scrimmage:
  • Anthony Davis was the best player on the court
  • Stephen Curry can get a shot whenever he wants and will start for this team
  • James Harden is the best player to average 12 pts, 6 reb, 8 ast if he can accept that role
  • Mason Plumlee played 15 minutes and Andre Drummond played 0
  • Rudy Gay got more minutes (12) than Korver (3), Parsons (5) and DeRozan (0) combined
  • Kyrie Irving played 14 minutes to Damian Lillard's 2
  • Kenneth Faried can give you 10 and 10 all tournament
  • Mason Plumlee looked good
  • Klay Thompson is going to be a huge asset coming off the bench for team USA
After watching the scrimmage here is my revised prediction on Team USA's FIBA World Cup Roster:
PGs: Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving
SGs: James Harden, Klay Thompson
SFs: Rudy Gay, Chandler Parsons, Kyle Korver
PFs: Kenneth Faried, Anthony Davis
Cs: Boogie Cousins, Mason Plumlee
Cut: Gordon Hayward, Andre Drummond, Damian Lillard

Rotation Prediction
PG/Fast Break Specialist and Distributor: Derrick Rose
SG/Key Scorer: Stephen Curry

C/Star Player: Anthony Davis
Back Up SF/Sixth Man: Rudy Gay
Back Up SG/Spark Plug: Klay Thompson
Back Up PG/Run Second Unit Offense: Kyrie Irving

Bench warmer: Kyle Korver

2014-15 NBA Categories

NBA on ESPN is trying to forecast next season's standings. Following that they will take a look at players to watch and rookie of the year probables.
This is my take on forecasting next year's association. I took a look at all of the NBA Teams and formulated categories to put them all in. These categories are primarily for the regular season.

Here they are:

The 5 Teams that should be the most fun to watch
1. Golden State Warriors
2. Oklahoma City Thunder
3. Cleveland Cavaliers
4. Los Angeles Clippers
5. Portland Trailblazers

The 5 Teams looking for a breakthrough season
1. Dallas
2. Chicago
3. Houston
4. Toronto
5. Memphis

The 4 Teams that should be really fun to follow
1. Charlotte
2. Phoenix
3. Washington
4. Atlanta

The 4 Teams that are trying to "rebuild" on the fly
1. Denver
2. Detroit
3. New Orleans
4. Minnesota

The 6 Teams that need to pick up a piece in next year's lottery
1. Philadelphia
2. Sacramento
3. Milwaukee
4. Utah
5. Orlando
6. Boston

The 6 Teams I'm just not that into
1. Los Angeles Lakers

4. Indiana
5. Miami
6. San Antonio

USA Basketball Update

The latest news out of team USA's camp was the cutting of Paul Milsap, Bradley Beal, and John Wall. With the cutting of these three players, Team USA is now down to 16 players in contention for a spot on the 12 man roster. Those sixteen players include:
F Kevin Durant
F Anthony Davis
G James Harden
G Stephen Curry
F Klay Thompson
F Gordon Hayward
C Mason Plumlee
C Andre Drummond
C DeMarcus Cousins
G Kyrie Irving
G Damian Lillard
F Kyle Korver
F Kenneth Farried
G DeMar DeRozan
F Chandler Parsons
G Derrick Rose

Kevin Love however, may still play for Team USA after any Wolves-Cavs-76ers trade goes through but that is not very likely. The deadline for the twelve man roster is August 29th, and the Kevin Love trade could go through as early as August 24th opening up the possibility for him to suit up for the Red, White, and Blue.

My prediction for the twelve man roster is as follows:
G: Derrick Rose, Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving
G: James Harden, Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry
F: Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan
F: Anthony Davis, Kenneth Farried
C: Andre Drummond, DeMarcus Cousins
Cuts- Gordon Hayward, Mason Plumlee, F Kyle Korver, F Chandler Parsons

NBA Mid-Season Tournament

Adam Silver made news recently from Las Vegas when he talked about the possibility of a mid-season tournament (like the FA Cup in the EPL), and his intentions to continue searching for ways to improve the league. I've already written about my stance on the playoffs, and to reiterate:

  • Abolishing the East/West Conferences
  • Taking the top 16 teams league-wide for the playoffs
  • Restructure the divisions from 6 divisions of 5 teams to 5 geographic divisions of 6 teams

Here is what those divisions would look like:

Pacific:
1. Portland Trailblazers
2. Sacramento Kings
3. Golden State Warriors
4. Los Angeles Lakers
5. Los Angeles Clippers
6. Phoenix Suns

South Central:
1. Utah Jazz
2. Denver Nuggets
3. Dallas Mavericks
4. San Antonio Spurs
5. Houston Rockets
6. Oklahoma City Thunder

Great Lakes:
1. Minnesota Timberwolves
2. Milwaukee Bucks
3. Chicago Bulls
4. Indiana Pacers
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
6. Detroit Pistons

Atlantic:
1. Boston Celtics
2. New York Knicks
3. Brooklyn Nets
4. Philadelphia 76ers
5. Washington Wizards
6. Toronto Raptors

South East:
1. New Orleans Pelicans
2. Miami Heat
3. Orlando Magic
4. Atlanta Hawks
5. Charlotte Hornets
6. Memphis Grizzlies

Now I do agree that the 82 game NBA Schedule is too long and quite boring (Many people suggest the off-season is more exciting). I prefer the idea of a 66 game schedule, and games only certain weekdays. Similar to the NFL who only play Monday, Thursday and Sunday. However that is for another post, and my point is that I do not like the idea of a mid-season tournament as a solution to make the regular season more exciting. Here is what I want to happen:

Without the conferences, I want them to have an All Star Team for every division. Currently the divisions in the NBA are pretty meaningless. Fans only focus on overall conference standings for the playoffs, but allowing for these geographic regions to team up for the All Star Game Tournament would be very exciting and bring new meaning to NBA divisions. Like the MLB, every team would need to be represented on the 12 man roster leading to increased interest from every market. The 6 teams would play a seeded tournament, and the tournament seeds would be based on combined division win percentage. So the 2 and 3 teams and 4 and 5 teams would play first, while the best division get byes. Here is what the new week long NBA All Star schedule would look like:

Sunday would be an off day. Monday night they would do the 3point, Dunk, and Skills competitions. Tuesday night they would have the Sophomore-Rookie Challenge. Wednesday would have the  4 vs 5, 3 vs 2  matchups. Thursday would be the 4/5 vs 1 matchup. Friday would be off. Saturday night would be the All Star Tournament Final. And the following Sunday would again be off.

This new system would have several advantages:

Unlike a 4 or 8 team mid-season tournament, all teams will have representation
This increase in representation will also increase viewership
More players will get the opportunity to participate in All Star festivities
Fans would be treated to 6 super teams that would be an absolute blast to watch
The NBA can incentivize the tournament so that players would try to win
If players try to win, the tournament would not be the glorified street ball game it currently is
Piggy backing, the All Star Tournament could have meaning like the MLB All Star Game
More players like Kyrie Irving (2014 ASG MVP) would have a chance to shine on a national stage

Hopefully Adam Silver takes a look at doing something like this. In my next post I will examine what these teams could have looked like last season.

NBA's Top 20 Point Guards

I still believe that Point Guard is the most important position in the league. Miami being the oddity in their four straight finals got away with it because Dwayne Wade and LeBron James were the primary ball handlers and had better ball handling skills than many of the players on this list. Criteria used to rank these guards included: all star appearances, All-NBA Team selections, championships, talent and athleticism, statistics, and post season performance.

1. Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers
2. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
3. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
4. Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs
5. Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls
6. Damian Lillard, Portland Trailblazers
7. Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers
8. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
9. John Wall, Washington Wizards
10. Goran Dragic, Phoenix Suns
11. Isaiah Thomas, Sacremento Kings
12. Kyle Lowry, Toronto Raptors
13. Jeff Teague, Atlanta Hawks
14. Mike Conley, Memphis Grizzlies
15. Eric Bledsoe, Phoenix Suns
16. Kemba Walker, Charlotte Hornets
17. Ricky Rubio, Minnesota Timberwolves
18. Ty Lawson, Denver Nuggets
19. Jrue Holiday, New Orleans Pelicans
20. Deron Williams, Brooklyn Nets

Free Agency Fit and Fever 4

The LeBron James death grip on Sports Center has come to an end, and the likes of Eric Bledsoe, Greg Monroe, and Ray Allen are not enough to warrant more speculation and coverage.

Free Agents Signed:
LeBron James is going back to Cleveland
Carmelo Anthony is staying in New York
Chris Bosh is staying in Miami
Dirk Nowitzki is staying in Dallas
Luol Deng is going to Miami
Pau Gasol is going to Chicago
Trevor Ariza is going to Houston
Paul Pierce is going to Washington
Kyle Lowry is staying in Toronto
Chandler Parsons is going to Dallas
Marcin Gortat is staying in Washington
Isaiah Thomas was traded to Phoenix
Gordon Hayward is staying in Utah
Shaun Livingston is going to Golden State
Vince Carter is going to Memphis
Mike Miller is going to Cleveland
Lance Stephenson is going to Charlotte
Carlos Boozer is going to Los Angeles (Lakers)

Free Agents still available:

G Eric Bledsoe RFA (Suns) is still available
F Greg Monroe RFA (Pistons) is still available
G Ray Allen UFA (Heat) is still available

Bledsoe and Monroe make up two guys still available that can be franchise corner stone players. These are the guys that you can begin to build a playoff team around. I think that both of these guys can and will be in the playoffs this season. Ray Allen and Carlos Boozer on the other hand, are high impact players in the post season. They should be highly sought after by any playoff team.

G Eric Bledsoe
Teams interested: Phoenix, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Philadelphia
Phoenix- Can unite Dragic, Thomas, and Bledsoe for the best ball handling trio in the league. With only losing Frye but adding Thomas this team will be in the playoffs with Eric.

Los Angeles- I'm not sure if they have the money, but Kobe only has a max of two years left. They need a young stud to sell to the fans. A half decade in the lottery would allow for a Clipper takeover. Bledsoe could be that guy and continue the Lakers' dominance.

Minnesota could land Bledsoe in a Kevin Love trade but: Chicago, Cleveland, and Golden State are closer to landing him.

They have the money. Nerlens Noel is their rookie this year, MCW was their rookie last year, Embiid will be on his way next year, and Dario Saric is probably coming the next. Adding Bledsoe won't make them a playoff team so the front office will still be able to draft in the lottery next season. With all of these players coming in they might make the move now to set up for success in two years.

F Greg Monroe
Teams interested: Detroit, Orlando, Portland

Building around Drummond and Monroe in the front court would make a strong foundation of a playoff team, but that would require moving Josh Smith. The three of these players can't play together, but keeping Monroe and Drummond is the better option.

Orlando would be an interesting spot for Monroe. Their future backcourt is set, and adding this big man to team up with Vucevic and Frye would be a smart play.

Portland would only be in the mix with some interesting Lopez/Kaman trade talks. I'm not sure if Aldridge and Monroe can play together, but I'd like to see them try.

G Ray Allen
Teams interested: Atlanta, Miami, Washington, Memphis

Atlanta is always looking to add perimeter shooting, but will only add Allen if they get a scoring wing that can help turn this team into an above .500 squad.

Miami would bring him back in a heartbeat for the right price but probably doesn't have enough money to make it work.

Washington is a prime landing spot. Having Allen play 12-15 minutes off the bench and knocking down corner threes in the playoffs for this team could be huge. They already added Pierce, and I don't know if there is still bad blood between the two, but if not a reunion in Washington could be interesting. A two year deal would still leave way for Kevin Durant in 2016.

Memphis needs help on the perimeter. They've already added Vince Carter, but Prince and T Allen aren't enough in shooting or scoring. Ray Allen and Vince Carter would be great additions to change the pace of the game. Conley, Randolph, and Gasol are good pieces to build around. Carter and R-Allen could be those added pieces.

MN Windchill Season 2 In The Books

The Minnesota Windchill concluded a great step forward in their second season Sunday vs Indianapolis in St Paul. In their first season the Windchill went 4-12, lost all of their games against Chicago and Madison, and couldn't break through in close games. This year changed everything. The Windchill finished 8-6, and were the only team to notch wins against every team in the division.

vs Madison: 1-2 overall, 0-2 on the road, 1-0 at home

vs Detroit: 3-0 overall, 2-0 on the road, 1-0 at home

vs Chicago: 1-2 overall, 0-1 on the road, 1-1 at home

vs Indianapolis: 1-2 overall, 0-1 on the road, 1-1 at home (both losses by 1 goal)

vs Cincinnati:  2-0 overall, 1-0 on the road, 1-0 at home

LEAGUE: 8-6 overall, 3-4 on the road, 5-2 at home

Midwest Division Standings 2014:
1. Madison Radicals :: 12-2
2. Chicago Wildfire :: 9-5
3. Indianapolis Alleycats :: 9-5
4. Minnesota Windchill :: 8-6
5. Cincinnati Revolution :: 4-10
6. Detroit Mechanix :: 0-14

Midwest Division Standings 2013:
1. Chicago Wildfire :: 14-2
2. Madison Radicals :: 13-3
3. Indianapolis Alleycats :: 9-7
4. Minnesota Windchill :: 4-12
5. Detroit Mechanix :: 4-12
6. Cincinnati Revolution :: 4-12

As you can see Minnesota made the biggest jump in performance, doubling their win totals from a year before. Something that was expected following the acquisition of a new coach, and taking into account all of their close losses last season. Here are a few key takeaways to think about, before we jump into more analysis later on.

1. Minnesota must figure out how to sustain success on the road like they do at home.
2. Minnesota was the only team to win against all of their divisional opponents
3. Minnesota is elite at full strength
4. Minnesota has the deepest talent pool to pull from in their division

MN United Fall Season Begins

MN United got off to a quick start to begin their Fall Season. The Loons traveled down to Fort Lauderdale for an opening match-up against the Strikers. They emerged victorious 3-0 and once again sit atop the NASL table. Their next game is their home opener against the Carolina Rail-Hawks, and if their international friendly against the Mexican U21 Team is any indication, there should be quite the crowd on hand to cheer on the Spring Champions.

United's Daniel Mendes began the scoring by deflecting in a corner kick from Justin Davis. The keeper for Fort Lauderdale attempted to punch the cross away but missed allowing for Mendes to clean up and take the 1-0 lead. Minnesota's next goal came in the 59th minute courtesy of forward Christian Ramirez whose tap in from a Justin Davis low cross gave himself sole possession of the NASL lead in goals. The final goal came in the 78th minute. A failed clear from a Strikers defender allowed M Miguel Ibarra a free run at the keeper. Ibarra beat the keeper off the dribble and buried the goal.

Although the scoreline was 3-0, Ft Lauderdale had no shortage of offensive chances. The Strikers peppered GK Mitch Hildebrandt, but Mitch was on top form making a variety of highly skilled saves and athletic deflections.

(Defender no. 2) Justin Davis finished with two assists
(Forward no. 18) Daniel Mendes finished with one goal
(Forward no. 21) Christian Ramirez finished with one goal
(Midfielder no. 10) Miguel Ibarra finished with one goal
(Midfielder no. 4) Aaron Pitchkolan finished with a yellow card

Free Agency Fit and Fever 3

Free Agency is beginning to wind down, but not before a few more high profile players need to sign on with their 2014-2015 team.

LeBron James is going back to Cleveland
Carmelo Anthony is staying in New York
Chris Bosh is staying in Miami
Dirk Nowitzki is staying in Dallas
Luol Deng is going to Miami
Pau Gasol is going to Chicago
Trevor Ariza is going to Houston
Paul Pierce is going to Washington
Kyle Lowry is staying in Toronto
Chandler Parsons is going to Dallas
Marcin Gortat is staying in Washington
Isaiah Thomas was traded to Phoenix
Gordon Hayward is staying in Utah
Shaun Livingston is going to Golden State
Vince Carter is going to Memphis
Mike Miller is going to Cleveland
Lance Stephenson is going to Charlotte

In my estimation there are still four high impact top free agents available

G Eric Bledsoe RFA (Suns) is still available
F Greg Monroe RFA (Pistons) is still available
F Carlos Boozer UFA (Bulls) was just amnestied
G Ray Allen UFA (Heat) is still available

Bledsoe and Monroe make up two guys still available that can be franchise corner stone players. These are the guys that you can begin to build a playoff team around. I think that both of these guys can and will be in the playoffs this season. Ray Allen and Carlos Boozer on the other hand, are high impact players in the post season. They should be highly sought after by any playoff team.

G Eric Bledsoe
Teams interested: Phoenix, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Milwaukee,
My pick for best fit: Phoenix
Jeff Hornacek already proved that a lineup with Bledsoe and Dragic is not only effective but deadly. With the addition of Isaiah Thomas they have the best depth of ball handlers in the league, and can be sporting combinations of the three guards the entire game. The loss of Frye may seem large, but the Morris Twins and PJ Tucker can come together to fill the void at the small forward/power forward position. The needed development of Alex Len and Miles Plumlee at the center position remains their largest weakness. The production from this exciting backcourt should be enough to put them into the playoffs.

F Greg Monroe
Teams interested: Detroit, Orlando,
My pick for best fit: Orlando
I've written about this before, but Greg Monroe to Orlando could be very cool to see. If he can be a serviceable long term center in this league, Orlando could turn him into a franchise corner stone. Those other three corners? Elfrid Payton rookie point guard, Victor Oladipo second year shooting guard, Aaron Gordon rookie power forward. Aside from those three youngsters: Mo Harkless, Tobias Harris and Channing Frye solidify the forward positions, and Vucevic gives them a tremendous backup center, or valuable trade asset moving forward.

F Carlos Boozer
Teams interested: Charlotte, Houston, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Phoenix
My pick for best fit: Houston

Houston decided not to match Chandler Parson's 3 year 46 million dollar offer sheet from Dallas and instead signed Trevor Ariza to fill his spot. They're going to be moving forward with Harden and Beverly in the backcourt, but don't really have an answer at the power forward position. Carlos Boozer could be that answer. Plugging Boozer into their starting lineup allows them to bring Troy Daniels and Terrence Jones off the bench. Both of which have skill sets that will give the Rockets added flexibility in the second unit. With Boozer, Houston should contend for one of the best starting fives in the league.

G Ray Allen
Teams interested: Atlanta, Miami, Washington, Memphis
My pick for best fit: Washington

The Wizards just added Paul Pierce to the mix to start at Small Forward for the Wizards, but their bench isn't among the tops in the league. I believe that adding Ray Allen to your bench to play 15 minutes a game would be crucial for the Wizards. Wall and Beal both terrorize defenses with their athleticism and finishing ability. Having Ray Allen shooting corner threes when either of these two guys make their way to the rim could help them in their pursuit of the conference championship game.

Free Agency Fit and Fever 2

Free Agency is beginning to wind down, but not before a few more high profile players need to sign on with their 2014-2015 team.

LeBron James is going back to Cleveland
Carmelo Anthony is staying in New York

Marcin Gortat is staying in Washington
Isaiah Thomas was traded to Phoenix
Gordon Hayward is staying in Utah
Shaun Livingston is going to Golden State
Vince Carter is going to Memphis
Mike Miller is going to Cleveland

In my estimation there are still five top free agents available

G Eric Bledsoe RFA (Suns) is still available
F Greg Monroe RFA (Pistons) is still available
G Lance Stephenson UFA (Pacers) is still available
F Carlos Boozer UFA (Bulls) was just amnestied
G Ray Allen UFA (Heat) is still available

Bledsoe, Monroe and Stephenson make up the three players still available that can be franchise changing in the regular season. These three guys can come in and have a high impact; pushing your team over the top and either into the playoffs or into a higher seed. Ray Allen and Carlos Boozer on the other hand, are high impact players in the post season. They should be highly sought after by any playoff team.

G Eric Bledsoe
Teams interested: Phoenix, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Milwaukee,
My pick for best fit: Phoenix

Aside from those three youngsters: Mo Harkless, Tobias Harris and Channing Frye solidify the forward positions, and Vucevic gives them a tremendous backup center, or valuable trade asset moving forward.

G Lance Stephenson
Teams interested: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Indiana,
My pick for best fit: Atlanta
They're building a sort of quasi Spurs type of style in Atlanta. They're loading up on shooters four positions deep, and I believe adding Lance would be a huge addition to their squad. Teague is a great franchise point guard that performed outstandingly against the Pacers in the playoffs. Milsap was just named to the All-Star team and averaged 18 and 8. They should have Horford back who also averaged 18 and 8. Adding Lance to the mix would give them a second player that can attack the rim off the dribble to open up shooting lanes for the Hawks. His addition to the starting lineup would allow them to bring sharp shooter Kyle Korver off the bench. Also Lance's ability to spread his statistics (he led the league last season in triple doubles) should allow him to flourish on a team with more scoring threats than Indiana.

2014 Team USA Basketball Talkers

August 30th marks the beginning of the first ever FIBA World Cup of Basketball being played in Spain this year. Team USA will be playing in a group with Dominican Republic, Finland, New Zealand, Turkey, and Ukraine. Much like the Olympics Team USA is expected to win easily. With stars at every position like Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Blake Griffin, and Kevin Love it isn't a surprise to see us dominate the competition.

After the announcement of Chandler Parsons being named to the training camp squad it got me thinking about USA Basketball. We have dominated the competition at both the Olympics and International tournaments since USA Basketball began using NBA stars in 1992 (The Dream Team). But players like Chris Webber, Jason Kidd, Glenn Robinson, Grant Hill, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, and Shaquille O'Neal could have headlined a roster of young NBA standout and college stars that would have been very exciting to watch.

For Soccer teams in the Olympics, they use U23 rosters. This gives them a chance to show off some of the best young players in their program and further their development through strong international competition. Learning about this got me thinking. Thinking that it would be really fun to see the United States do something like this with their national basketball team. It isn't that fun to see the best NBA players casually dominating the competition on their way to another gold. I argue that instead fans would enjoy seeing young NBA standouts and college stars once again representing their country on the world stage.

Currently USA Basketball has invited 19 players to their summer camp. These 19 players will compete for to be named to the 12 man roster that will compete in Spain. They include:
Kevin Durant :: Kevin Love :: James Harden :: Anthony Davis :: Derrick Rose :: DeMar DeRozan
Chandler Parsons :: Stephen Curry :: Klay Thompson :: Kyrie Irving :: Blake Griffin :: Paul George
Damian Lillard :: Gordan Hayward :: DeMarcus Cousins :: Bradley Beal :: Andre Drummond
Kenneth Faried :: Kyle Korver

What I would like to see happen is an age cap. of some sorts. I'd be interested in an under 25 years cap, as well as an under 23 cap as well.

If a U25 cap, here are the players that would still be eligible from the original 19:

G Bradley Beal :: C Demarcus Cousins :: F Anthony Davis :: C Andre Drummond :: F Kenneth Faried
F Paul George :: G Kyrie Irving :: G Damian Lillard :: G Klay Thompson

This would give players like Damian Lillard, Paul George, DeMarcus Cousins and Klay Thompson a chance to further their stardom by playing for their country against strong international competition. With this core, the USA would still dominate international competition, but get a chance to do it with exciting young players that gives an early look into what's in store for the rest of their NBA Careers.

What is even more appealing to me is the idea of a U23 cap. This would be a true early look at future NBA Stars, and give casual fans a look at how good they are.

Here is what the Team USA U23 starting 5 would look like:

PG Kyrie Irving
SG Bradley Beal
SF Kawhi Leonard
PF Anthony Davis
C Andre Drummond

I still believe with this core that team USA would be heavy favorites for the gold, but the real benefit goes to the fans and players. Think about how fun this team would be to watch.
Kyrie Irving is a top 10 point guard in the league and All Star Game MVP.
Bradley Beal is an electric shooting guard coming off of a great postseason performance with the Wizards. Kawhi Leonard was the NBA Finals MVP, and would be an awesome international edition to the team. Anthony Davis is an all star and is possibly the most exciting young player in the league.
Finally, Andre Drummond is an up and coming center for the Pistons that headlined the First Team of my All Underrated players.

If USA Basketball decided to switch to a U23 team in the FIBA World Cup, here is what the final 12 man roster could look like:
1. Kyrie Irving G Cleveland Cavaliers
2. Brad Beal G Washington Wizards
3. Kawhi Leonard F San Antonio Spurs
4. Anthony Davis F New Orleans Pelicans
5. Andre Drummond C Detroit Pistons
6. Michael Carter-Williams G Philadelphia 76ers
7. Harrison Barnes F Golden State Warriors
8. Dion Waiters G Cleveland Cavaliers
9. Victor Oladipo G Orlando Magic
10. Jabari Parker F Milwaukee Bucks
11. Nerlens Noel C Philadelphia 76ers
12. Elfrid Payton G Orlando Magic
Alternate: Tristan Thompson F Cleveland Cavaliers
Alternate: Jared Sullinger F Boston Celtics

Free Agency Fit and Fever

NBA Free Agency is now in full swing. With LeBron and Carmelo signing with Cleveland and NY their log jam for the rest of the free agents is gone, and teams are in a mad scramble to round out their roster with big signings. Here's what has happened since LeBron and Melo made their decisions:
(sources used: basketball.realgm.com)

F Chris Bosh resigned for big money with Miami
G Isaiah Thomas was signed and traded to the Phoenix Suns
F Pau Gasol announced he will sign with the Bulls
F Trevor Ariza agreed to terms with Houston
F Paul Pierce signed with the Wizards
F Luol Deng signed with the Heat
F Chandler Parsons signed with the Mavericks

Chandler Parsons was a restricted free agent signed by the Mavericks. With the signing of Trevor Ariza, Houston decided against matching the 3 year 46 million dollar offer sheet. Parsons is now officially a Dallas Maverick.

Here are the high impact free agents still on the market:
G Eric Bledsoe RFA (Suns)
F/C Greg Monroe RFA (Pistons)
G Lance Stephenson UFA (Pacers)
G Dwayne Wade UFA (Heat)
G Ray Allen UFA (Heat)
G Mike Miller UFA (Grizzlies)

G Eric Bledsoe RFA (Suns)

Bledsoe is one of the leagues most dynamic young combo guards and is seeking (and will probably receive) close to a max contract in free agency this summer. Bledsoe is restricted, so even if another team signs him to an offer sheet, the Suns will be able to retain him. Eric should return to the Suns. Jeff Hornacek has already proved that his dual combo guard lineup of Bledsoe and Dragic is lethal, and with the acquisition of G Isaiah Thomas from the Kings, this could be the most wicked backcourt in the entire league. Teams that should be interested in the guard include: Atlanta, Miami, LAL, Milwaukee, and Dallas.
If the Suns sign Bledsoe they will have an upgraded and deep roster
G: Eric Bledsoe, Isaiah Thomas
G: Goran Dragic, Gerald Green
F: PJ Tucker, Tyler Warren
F: Markief Morris, Marcus Morris
C: Miles Plumlee, Alex Len
Phoenix would be ten players deep and could maybe make even more moves in the coming weeks to restock for a playoff campaign.
Atlanta should try to sign Bledsoe to team him up with excellent guard Jeff Teague in the backcourt.
Miami needs a young star to build around and Bledsoe could be that guy.
Dallas has money and if they lose out on Parsons Bledsoe could be a good replacement on a talented roster.
Milwaukee is on the rise by adding Jabari Parker and Jason Kidd. Bledsoe would only add to that.
The Lakers have been the biggest losers in free agency and are on the brink of desperation.

F/C Greg Monroe RFA (Pistons)

Another restricted free agent, Greg Monroe has proved himself as a top big men in the league. Detroit tried and failed to play Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, and Andre Drummond on the court at the same time. I don't believe that they can afford to sign all three to large deals if one has to always bee on the bench. My gut tells me that he is going to garner a large deal and will be leaving the Pistons.
Teams that are interested include: Atlanta, Detroit, Orlando, and Portland

Portland has already signed Chris Kaman to back up Robin Lopez at the center position so I don't think they are viable, but a starting front court of Aldrige and Monroe would be a scary pairing for a team that already made the second round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Orlando is very intriguing and I would argue the best fit. With the departure of Arron Afflalo, Orlando is in need of a star player to build around. By drafting Elfrid Payton they will start him alongside second year guard Victor Oladipo in one of the youngest and most exciting back courts in the league. F Aaron Gordon drafted fourth overall is a very raw player, and will probably need a year before he starts making a large impact. Orlando already signed Channing Frye, sharp shooting power forward, from Phoenix and paired him with Vucevic whom had a good 2013-2014 campaign. Signing Greg to take over at center could transform them into a playoff team in the weak Eastern Conference.
G Elfrid Payton, G Victor Oladipo, F Maurice Harkless, PF Channing Frye, C Greg Monroe
Bench: Aaron Gordon, Nikola Vucevic, Ben Gordon

Detroit I'm just not sure about. Drummond needs to get paid, Josh Smith is getting paid, and putting that much salary space in three guys that can't even play on the court together just doesn't seem like a good idea. I think the Pistons would be better served signing Lance Stephenson.

Atlanta I don't see as a player either. They have Horford and Milsap which is an all star duo in the front court, and Jeff Teague at the point. They have a bunch of three point shooters and I think they should use their salary cap space like Detroit in search of another guard or swing forward that can shoot and score off the dribble.

G Lance Stephenson UFA (Pacers)

I don't believe Lance is coming back. The Pacers are holding pat at about ten million a year-which is what he should get paid-but in a league desperate for good shooting guards Lance has the opportunity to get paid in the 12 to 13 million dollar range.
Teams interested include: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Pacers, LAL
The Lakers don't seem to be a player. Kobe is still going to be around for two years and Lance is smarter than to take a back seat to a player like him.

Indiana doesn't seem ready to give him the contract he wants, but could always change their minds and give him the contract.

Chicago is readying to use the rest of their salary cap space to sign Pau Gasol, and are perfectly fine moving forward with Jimmy Butler at shooting guard.

Dallas is still waiting to see if Houston matches their 3 year 46 million dollar offer sheet for Chandler Parsons. If Houston matches they become a player. This would be a very good fit for Lance and they have the money to give him the contract he wants. Pairing him with Monta and Dirk on the perimeter with newly reacquired Tyson Chandler defending the rim would be an upgraded team from last season that already nearly made it into the second round.

Charlotte would be the most best fit. With their name change back to the Hornets, sweet new jerseys, and young and cool lineup, Charlotte is my pick at this season's coolest team. Putting him with Kemba Walker would be one of the most exciting back courts in the league. They are already anchored by NBA Third team Al Jefferson at Center. Have a franchise point guard in Kemba Walker. Athletic young swingman Kidd-Gilchrist and with additions of Vonleh to replace McRoberts at the four and PJ Hairston scoring off the bench, this should be an improved team that makes the second round in the Eastern Conference.
PG Kemba Walker, SG Lance Stephenson, SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, PF Noah Vonleh, C Al Jefferson
Bench:  Gerald Henderson, Cody Zeller, Chris Douglas-Roberts

Boston seems unlikely. If they make the deal for Kevin Love and then bring in Lance they would have a good core in Rondo, Stephenson, and Love, but wouldn't crack the top four in the east. My prediction is that Boston misses out on Love, and trades Rondo and Jeff Green to go into full rebuilding mode.

Atlanta desperately needs a scoring wing. They are set with Horford at the top and Teague at the point. Milsap is their all star scoring threat and helps open up the floor for their many shooters, but another athletic swingman in Stephenson would be a good signing.

Dwayne Wade UFA (Heat)
He's going back to the Heat.

G Ray Allen UFA (Miami)

Any playoff team could use this sharp shooting veteran. If he decides to postpone retirement, he'll be wielding offers from many teams after free agents like Stephenson and Parsons are off the block.

G Mike Miller UFA (Memphis)

Mike Miller has a lot of interested in joining James in Cleveland. Similar to Ray he will resign with a playoff team. A few days or a week from now we will better know what teams still have enough cash to sign him.

That's it for this update on Free Agency Fit and Fever. Expect more coming in the next few days as dominoes continue to fall.

TWolves Draft Recap

Thursday June 26th was the NBA Draft in Brooklyn, NY. This was one of the most coveted draft classes in years due to the extreme depth, possible franchise changers up top, and impact players outside of the lottery. The Timberwolves finished their 2013-2014 campaign as the 13th team in the lottery after going 40-42 and missing the playoffs.

With the 13th pick the TWolves selected Zach Lavine, Guard from UCLA.
With the 40th pick the TWolves selected Glen Robinson III, Guard from Michigan
With the 44th pick the TWolves sold the pick
With the 53rd pick the TWolves sold the pick

With their first selection the Minnesota Timberwolves selected Zach Lavine. A one year guard from UCLA that averaged less than 10 points and 3 assists last season. This has been seen as a "swinging for the fences" type of pick because Zach is a tremendous athlete but has underdeveloped basketball skills. Glenn Robinson III, son of 1994 first overall pick Glen Robinson, was also drafted for his athleticism, and although he is a second round draft pick, could contribute right away. Glen was a two year starter for Michigan and could be a lethal pair with Zach in transition offense.

The Twolves want Zach to be a combo guard that can both back up Rubio when he comes out of the game, and also play along side of him. They expect less from Glen, but want him to be able to get physical when guarding opposing forwards, and also be a threat from the perimeter when playing shooting guard.
2013-2014 Depth Chart
PGs: Ricky Rubio, JJ Barea
SGs: Kevin Martin, Alexey Shved
SFs: Corey Brewer, Chase Buddinger, Shabazz Muhammad, Robbie Hummel

I believe that in order for the Twolves to make the jump to 50 wins and the playoffs, they need contributions from both players right away.
2014-2015 Depth Chart
PGs: Ricky Rubio, Zach Lavine
SGs: Kevin Martin, Zach Lavine, Glen Robinson
SFs: Corey Brewer, Shabazz Muhammad, Chase Buddinger, Glen Robinson

I think that Zach needs to be playing as Ricky's direct back up, and even be able to play alongside Ricky. JJ Barea is not a playoff team's back up point guard, and if we need to continue playing him we aren't in a position to snag a playoff spot.

Glen Robinson has more time to develop and could be playing behind Brewer, Muhammad, and Buddinger at the Small Forward position. The best case scenario for Glen would be for him to play some time at shooting guard behind Kevin Martin and Zach Lavine. Look for Glen to be a rotation player in 2015 or 2016.

If the TWolves make the trade for Wiggins, Waiters, Thompson and Bennett, look for this young exciting team to be about a year away from being something special.

NBA Realignment

How sick and tired is everyone about hearing how loaded the West is and how weak the East is. The fact that the best 16 teams are not necessarily the teams in the playoffs is ridiculous and Adam Silver needs to make a change. In the age of private planes, geographic boundaries are not what they used to be. Major League Baseball, the NHL, and the NFL have all or will make, changes to their playoff systems within the next 2 years. Why shouldn't the NBA do the same? I am proposing that the NBA ditch the East/West Conferences, restructure the divisions geographically, and  take the top 16 teams into the playoffs rather than the top 8 per conference.

Here's what it currently looks like:
Western Conference,
Northwest: Portland, Oklahoma City, Minnesota, Denver, Utah
Pacific: Sacramento, Golden State, LA Lakers, LA Clippers, Phoenix
Southwest: San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis

Eastern Conference,
Central: Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland
Atlantic: Toronto, Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia
Southeast: Washington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami

Here's what it should look like:
North Central: Minnesota, Milwaukee, Detroit, Chicago, Indiana, Cleveland
Pacific: Portland, Sacramento, Golden State, LA Lakers, LA Clippers, Phoenix
Southeast: Charlotte, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, New Orleans, Memphis
North East: Toronto, Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Washington
South Central: Utah, Denver, Oklahoma City, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston

In the current playoff system, the divisions are fairly meaningless. Although the third division leader needs to be a top four seed, fans usually only pay attention to the overall conference standings instead of individual division standings. In this system, divisions are restructured for geography to cut down on frivolous regular season travel and build on geographic rivalries present in other sports.

Another added benefit would be in free agency. Free Agents would no longer worry about playing in the lowly Eastern Conference, or the stacked West. Conference strength would not be a factor, and players could more often choose the best situation. But the real benefit is in the playoffs.

As it stood the teams making the playoffs were:
Western Conference:
1. SAS, 2. OKC, 3. LAC, 4. HOU, 5. POR, 6. GSW, 7. MEM, 8. DAL
and their league standings were, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Eastern Conference:
1. IND, 2. MIA, 3. TOR, 4. CHI, 5. WAS, 6. BKN, 7. CHA, 8. ATL
and their league standings were, 4, 5, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18

The current system had 8 of the top ten teams face off for only one spot in the finals, while the 4 and 5 seeds in the league played for the second. NBA fans deserved to have a chance at an Oklahoma City San Antonio Final in which Serge would be healthy for the entire series.

Another factor in this argument is that NBA fans were deprived of watching the Phoenix Suns and Goran Dragic in the playoffs. We should have been treated to a first round match up of the Suns and the Pacers. The fact that a team that goes 48 and 34 but still doesn't make the playoffs is ridiculous, and that instead of them we got the 18th best team in the league (ATL) that was 38 and 44.

The system also did a disservice to Atlanta. They should have been in the lottery. They should have had a chance at the no. 1 overall pick, and should have drafted at no. 13 with the opportunity to draft Zach Lavine or Tyler Warren if they wanted too.

NBA franchises should be rewarded for performance, not punished based on their geography. The NBA is becoming a more global brand, and need to put the best product on the floor when the most eyes are watching, in the playoffs.

My 2014 NBA Lottery Mock Draft

The draft is only one night away and here is my lottery mock draft.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers                                    Joel Embiid
2. Milwaukee Bucks                                      Jabari Parker
3. Philadelphia 76ers                                      Andrew Wiggins
4. Orlando Magic                                          Dante Exum
5. Utah Jazz                                                   Julius Randle
6. Boston Celtics                                           Noah Vonleh
7. LA Lakers                                                Gary Harris
8. Sacramento Kings                                     Aaron Gordon
9. Charlotte Hornets                                      Marcus Smart
10. Philadelphia 76ers                                    Nik Stauskas
11. Denver Nuggets                                       Doug McDermott
12. Orlando Magic                                         Dario Saric
13. Minnesota Timberwolves                          Shabazz Napier
14. Phoenix Suns                                           TJ Warren

Despite the injury issues Cleveland has the opportunity to draft a franchise changing center with an impact unseen since Dwight Howard ten years ago. If LeBron comes back and they don't trade the no. 1 to MN for Love we're talking about Irving, LeBron, and Embiid as the corner stones of a championship caliber team.

Jabari wants to play for Milwaukee and the Buck's desperately want an all-star caliber player that can be the face of the franchise and bring legitimacy to a franchise that hasn't contended in years.

Philly is going to sweat it up, but ultimately will get their man Wiggins with the third overall pick. Teaming him with Noel gives them a very young and athletic team led by MCW. I don't like them trading him to LA for the 7, but trying to build around solid young PG, SF and C.

It makes sense. The hype around Exum isn't proven, but having a backcourt of Exum and Oladipo gives them a chance to have Victor play the 2 and guard point guards with Exum running point and guarding 2s. Lethal.

I saw Randle play in Florida and in seeing him I knew he was ready for the NBA. He can step back to hit fifteen footers, and will mesh well with Derrick Favors in the frontcourt. Utah may have another year in the lottery, but their starting to build something.

Vonleh has high upside, and in my opinion is the best asset available at this point in the draft. The Celtics are a bit clustered on their roster, but will either make a big move or blow it up. Selecting Vonleh could be a PF to build a team around if they deal Green and Rondo.

Kendall Marshall is not a playoff Point Guard. Kobe's coming back and the Lakers are going to try to bring in forwards in free agency. A backcourt of Harris and Kobe is very good. Harris is a smart player from Michigan State that doesn't need the ball in his hands to score. His perimeter shooting will be important for drive and kick scenarios.

Boogie Cousins, Aaron Gordon and Rudy Gay in the frontcourt. Isaiah Thomas running the point and hopefully an emerging Ben McLemore at the 2. The Kings seriously may have something hear. Derrick Williams and Royce White might pan out as decent bench players, and then we're talking about a 6 seed  in the West.

A backcourt of Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart. Bad-Freaking-Ass. Not to mention Al Jeff down low. The Hornets now have possibly the coolest jerseys in the league, but if they add Stephenson or a decent three that can shoot the ball, they may just have the coolest team in the entire league, and a good playoff team in the weaker East.

PG Michael Carter-Williams, SG Nik Stauskas, SF Andrew Wiggins, PF Somebody, C Nerlens Noel. They won't be good right away, but this would be a young, athletic, defensive, run and gun squad that would put fans in the stands even if the wins aren't there. I want this almost as bad as Charlotte.

The Nuggets are another franchise in limbo. They have decent veterans but no star. The depth is there, but injuries have held them back and they missed the playoffs a year after being knocked out in the first round against Golden State. I believe a trade is looming, but until then they should take the best  asset available in proven shooter Dougie McBuckets.

Saric isn't going to be available for another few years because of his new Europe deal, but Orlando isn't ready to be good yet. They don't seem to want to keep Afflalo, and instead are shopping him for a pick. Maybe even eleven. They've got a good center in Vucevic, and maybe the Oladipo/Exum backcourt. So stashing Saric and drafting more young talent could mean a contender in three years.

Barea sucks. SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS. By far my least favorite player. Every time he was in the game I could feel my blood pressure rising. I love Dieng and Muhammad, but we seriously missed having a backup point guard like Trey Burke. Besides teaming up both the Shabazzes, Napier just went Kemba Walker and led his team to a national title. The kid can shoot and will be a sick end of game closer. We need him. He is undervalued and will be a starter in this league. Take Napier.

I don't care about this pick. I want Phoenix to package their first round picks, Frye and Len and send them to Atlanta for Al Horford. The Hawks are building around Teague and Milsap with great shooters and players with a high basketball IQ. Their looking to build a San Antonio of the East per say, and adding Frye would give them another sharp shooting forward, Len gives them a rim protector of the future still young enough to mold into the system, and Phoenix's picks would give them the opportunity to flood their roster with elite young talent in a deep draft to begin building towards the future.

If the Suns don't trade this pick to ATL, I love Warren for them. They have the best backcourt in the league behind Dragic and Bledsoe. They have the best Heat Check guy in the league in Gerald Green. They have the Morris twins and Frye solidifying the frontcourt, and adding Warren as a scoring threat from the 3 would give them an awesome lineup moving forward. I'm thinking four seed in the West barring injuries and an Alex Len improvement.

What do you think is going to happen tomorrow night? Are Napier and Warren going too high? Are you caught up on Payton?  This is what I most want to happen. Let me know what you want to happen. Comment below.

Love Dial, Who wants to trade for Love? Part 2

Kevin Love drama is heating up. I have been sitting on it for weeks, and still believe that Kevin Love to Cleveland is the best option. This deal seems to be contingent on a LeBron James signing, but I still think it would be in Cleveland's best interest. Let's take a look at what I think it could look like.

Cleveland would get:
PF Kevin Love
SG Kevin Martin

Minnesota would get:
PF Tristan Thompson
PF Anthony Bennett
SF Andrew Wiggins
SG Dione Waiters

It works for both sides. This is an obvious double positive for both sides. If this is the "deal" that is currently being offered by the Cavs, it is ludicrous that they haven't agreed to it already. If this deal goes through, here's a look at their starting lineup.

Cleveland
PG: Kyrie Irving
SG: Kevin Martin
SF: LeBron James
PF: Kevin Love
C: Anderson Varejao

Title contender. Nobody is talking about it, but if Kevin Martin is your fourth scoring option, you are doing something right. he averaged 19 points a game as the no 2 option on what should have been a playoff team in Minnesota. The same team that had Kevin Love as a no 1 option, and again, should have been a playoff team. That 1 and 2 combo of Love and Martin now becomes your third and fourth offensive options. The Timberwolves were already one of the leagues most potent offenses and coupling their two best offensive players with Kyrie and LeBron is downright nasty. All that is left to do is sign some veterans to round out the bench. This is what I think LeBron wants. Kevin Love is better than Bosh, Kyrie is better than D-Wade/Chalmers and Cole, Martin is better than Allen, and Varejao is better than Birdman. Make the move LeBron!

Minnesota
PGs: Ricky Rubio, Zach Lavine
SGs: Dione Waiters, Andrew Wiggins
SFs: Corey Brewer, Shabazz Muhammad, Glen Robinson III
PFs: Tristan Thompson, Anthony Bennett
Cs: Nikola Pekovic, Gorgui Dieng

This now becomes a roster loaded with athletes and young players on the rise. Dione Waiters is a shooting guard of the future poised for a breakout year. Andrew Wiggins is a future all star. Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic are top ten players in the conference at their position. Tristan Thompson averaged 11 points 9 rebounds in Cleveland, and would be a better defensive player than Love. That's solid production from a player that could still improve. Corey Brewer is a solid off the bench veteran that can provide both defense and offense. Gorgui Dieng is the perfect backup center that provides a defensive boost when he is put in. Anthony Bennett, Glen Robinson III, and Zach Lavine are all young and talented, and could develop into rotation guys or even starters if they harness their potential. This would be a very very fun roster that would reignite the people of the target center

This is the roster Minnesota fans need. This is the roster that I need.

Go Wolves. MAKE THE TRADE.

Underrated All NBA Team

This is my Underrated All NBA Team. I have a tendency to favor young players that haven't completely burst onto the scene yet. These are solid players to have on your hometown team, or awesome jerseys to collect. These are players that are not on the first, second, or third all NBA teams, these players are not All Stars, and are not on the all defensive teams. They're the perfect pieces to supplement a playoff roster, or begin to build a franchise around.

 1st Team
G Jeff Teague
G Brad Beal
G Lance Stephenson
F Andre Drummond
F DeMarcus Cousins

 2nd Team
G Mike Conley
G Kyle Lowry
G Isaiah Thomas
F Chandler Parsons
F Greg Monroe

3rd Team
G Kemba Walker
G Dione Waiters
G Avery Bradley
F Harrison Barnes
F Jeff Green

Love Dial, Who wants to trade for Love? 1

The Minnesota Timberwolves are going to trade Kevin Love. Public favor is starting to turn, and Minnesota sports fans are sick of hearing his talks of "whatever situation I end up in" and "I'm letting my agent handle it". His passive aggressive national media tour is making Minnesota sports fans feel like the girlfriend watching her boyfriend: flirt with surfer girl Golden State, the vegan chick Denver, or that snobby gal from out east that took her last boyfriend too. The offers are beginning to see light, and with only a week left before the draft, the intensity will increase until the Wolves pull the trigger on another franchise changing trade.
Hopefully this one will get them out of the purgatory that is the NBA Lottery.

Trades reported by @ NBACentral on Twitter.

Trade no 1. Boston Sends

6th overall pick
17th overall pick
Future 1st round picks
and A young player (Avery Bradley/Kelly Olynyk/Jeff Green/Jared Sullinger)

Minnesota Sends

F Kevin Love

B Trade Rating. This will infuse a lot of young talent on the Timberwolves, but no real established veteran. In the end unless you nail the draft with the 6, 13, and 17 picks MN would likely be in the lottery again next year as they wait for young talent to develop.
In order for this trade to go through, I believe Boston needs to offer Avery Bradley and Jeff Green along with the three picks. Avery Bradley and Jeff Green would be great pieces to surround a different all-star player, but are not all-stars themselves.

Trade no 2. Denver Sends

F Wilson Chandler
F Kenneth Faried
G Arron Afflalo (from Magic)

Minnesota sends
F Kevin Love

B+ Trade Rating. All three of these are proven NBA veterans. Afflalo led Orlando in scoring this season, Faried is an athletic freak that averages close to 10 and 10. A front court of he and Pekovic would be physically imposing and he and Dieng would defend well. Lastly, Chandler averaged 13 points last season, and would offer good depth at the small forward position with Corey Brewer. This trade would saturate the Wolves with average NBA players but no stars. A safer option than the Boston option, but does not guarantee a playoff spot in 2015.

Trade no 3. Golden State Sends

F David Lee
G Klay Thompson
1st round draft pick

Minnesota sends

F Kevin Love
G Kevin Martin

A- Trade Rating. I am all for combining Kevin Love and Kevin Martin to get a better deal, but this one isn't quite there. The NBA is a star driven league. For the most part the team with the best player or players wins the playoff series. In the case of the finals Miami had the best player, but SA had players 2-5. Klay Thompson gives MN a legitimate near All Star that could develop into a great shooting guard. David Lee is also a quality big man, but he and Pek together don't add any defense. What really needs to happen in this deal is Harrison Barnes. Barnes also has the ability to develop into a special player, and with Klay Thompson and Rubio could be a playoff caliber core.

MN United fall 2-0 to Sporting KC

The Loons fell to Sporting KC 2-0 in Sporting Park knocking themselves out of the US Open Cup. United was fresh off of their NASL Spring League Championship run, and hoped to play spoiler against Sporting. The teams were scoreless through the first half, but an early second half red card put United a man down; spurring KC's offense. Minnesota had a few good looks, but ultimately could not hold back the defending MLS champions. Saad and Martinez notched scores for KC.

Christian Ramirez-#21 Forward- for MN United was generating some pregame buzz. The US Open Cup promotes inter-league matchups between MLS and NASL clubs that historically were seen as quasi tryouts for NASL players looking to move up to the A league. Christian Ramirez filled in brilliantly for the injured Pablo Campos leading the team in both goals scored (5) and assists (4) during the spring season (9 games). A big game from him against a top MLS club could spark  interest from the forward. Ramirez created a few good looks, but KC dominated possession in the second half and stunted the United's chances.

What's next for the Loons in their Summer of Soccer? Their next match is against the Mexican U21 team on the Fourth of July. Following that the NASL Fall Season kicks off with MN on the road against Fort Lauderdale, and another exciting friendly brings Swansea City to Blaine for a club friendly on the 19th.
